What fish I should choose?
There are several species of fish you can choose if you start your journey as an angler. The following list gives you only five of them, but pretty common occurrence as well as not too difficult fishing chance make steelhead salmon and all other fish very good choice.
This particular type of fish is one of the most common gamefish in the States. It is a variation of rainbow trout, a fish encountered only in freshwater. However, when rainbow trout migrates from rivers and lakes, they move to the Pacific Ocean. After several years, they change the colour of their head, become bigger, and spicier – what makes steelhead salmon ideal for fishing. They diet is very varied – they can eat almost anything they find – starting from fish eggs or insects, and ending on mollusks, crustaceans, and even smaller fishes. You can use them as a living bait, or you can always make use of PowerBait, specially designed bait to catch steelhead salmon.
This particular fish is, similarly to steelhead salmon, native to the Pacific Ocean. The interesting fact about the colour of grunt fish is that it usually has silvery-cream colour but it can modify it and adjust to the surroundings. This species feeds on shrimp, annelids, mollusks, or even other crustaceans. The most common place, where you may encounter grunt fish is near reefs, docks. They can also be met offshore up to 115 feet. This fish is also a very good choice for baits, since they are preyed on by larger specimens – including sharks and barracudas.
Another example of very good beginner fish is squirrel fish. This family is quite colourful, so except for nice catch in games, it is also used for aquariums. The main food they prefer is plankton and smaller fishes, but some species also enjoy shrimps and sand-dwelling worms. The most common places where you can encounter squirrel fish is deep underneath the surface – in many cases in caves and near reefs. Therefore, this particular species can be harder to find.
In terms of cabezon, we are not going to have any troubles finding this particular species. It is widely available throughout the whole west coast of the United States. However, they are more common in the north. As for precise place of occurrence, we should look for rocky ledges, since they enjoy rugged shorelines. The best timing for us to catch cabezon is when they migrate to spawn. Then, there are near the surface almost all the time. We have to remember that these fish are poisonous to humans!
Spadefish are very popular as gamefish, since they like to fight and for their size, they are quite strong. They feed mostly on plankton and benthic invertebrates. Spadefish can found in the East Coast of United States, especially along the coast of Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and even down below.
